“We stress reducing street crimes as they cause trauma and prolonged fear among the communities,” Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak told members of the administration and civil servants at a gathering of civil service officers at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre recently.
Reducing the crime rate is the first of the six National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) and key performance indicators (KPIs) Najib announced on his 100th day in office earlier this month.
Street crimes such as snatch theft and robbery made up 17 per cent of the overall crime index last year.
The hot spots are Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang and Johor which accounted for 72 per cent of such crimes in the country last year.
The prime minister said members of Rela would be given training so that they could be roped in to assist police in battling street crime.
Selected police stations and facilities will be upgraded in addition to enhancing crime prevention measures such as increasing the number of closed-circuit TV cameras.
The Home Ministry will work with the Attorney-General’s Chambers
and the Prime Minister’s Office in finding ways to speed up the legal processes on backlogged cases, including the setting up of tribunals or courts specifically to handle street crime cases.
Dear listerners from far and near, if you have any suggestion as to how we should combat this street crime, please leave your comments.
