Abdullah announced he will resign April 2 and hand over the government to Najib, completing a power transition one year in the making after the ruling coalition's shock drubbing in general elections.
“I wish to retire with a feeling of peace. I want to carry no negative emotions with me," Abdullah said. He will take a short break from politics to help his wife with her garden but will continue to contribute to the party.
Najib said Abdullah has agreed not to criticize him in public the way Mahathir did.
“After I obtain His Majesty's consent, the date for the official handing over of power would be set," he said.
After his speech, Abdullah walked over and embraced Mahathir, who attended the congress for first time in four years, apparently to mark Abdullah's departure.
DR. MAHATHIR TO REJOIN UMNO
Muhyiddin said Dr Mahathir's presence more or less reflected his recognition of the new Umno leadership line-up.
Asked why he decided to attend the assembly after having decided against doing so earlier, Dr Mahathir said Muhyiddin's election as the deputy president gave him the confidence that the anticipated changes in Umno would take place after all."I think there is hope for the future," he said.

MUHYIDDIN PLEDGES TO BE A GOOD AND LOYAL DEPUTY
"I am No. 2. A No. 2 should act like a No. 2, and not as No. 1,"
“Thus I pledge that I will be by his side, through good and bad times. I will not be the deputy that will bring about his downfall,” he said.
Muhyiddin said he would heed the lesson from history, when one deputy president had tried to act like he was the boss.
